London Stansted Airport is an international airport located at Stansted Mountfitchet in the district of Uttlesford in Essex, 42 mi northeast of Central London and 0.9 mi from the Hertfordshire border. London Stansted serves 200 destinations across Europe, Middle East and Africa.
For this project, Stansted Airport required renewal works for the airside baggage hall; working alongside the main contractor of Stansted Airport. A particular challenge was due to the fact that the project had been inherited from their previous steelwork contractor. A13 Steel’s engineers were required to amend steelwork connection to existing columns according to the reinforcement bars’ location. In total, there were up to 30t steelwork installed in a just a couple of weeks.
As all the works were completed in the airside part, A13 Steel had to ensure that everything throughout was planned within a second’s accuracy. Every single piece of equipment, as well as employees, had to be checked prior to entering the site. Cranes were not permitted to be used for offloads which is why A13 Steel had to use a low loader trailer; making sure that everything was completed within the highest standards. Access to the site was arranged by the airport security. A13 Steel’s installation team successfully achieved magnificent work with installing steelwork and preparing access for the BEUMER robotic machinery.
